Lightweight Camper Trailers Under 1000kg Australia
For buyers searching for a lightweight camper trailer under 1000kg in Australia, the number on the brochure is only the beginning. A low tare can make towing, storage and manoeuvring easier, but the useful comparison is the complete setup: tare, ATM, payload, tow-ball load, fitted options and the realistic weight once the trailer is packed for a trip.
IWANA currently offers three compact campers with reference weights below 1,000kg: the Landscape at approximately 650kg tare, the Outback 2.0 at 850kg tare, and the Drift at a 700kg dry reference weight. Final plated weight varies with the individual build and selected options.
What does “under 1000kg” actually mean?
When people search for campers under 1,000kg, they are often referring to tare mass—the trailer’s published mass in its specified empty condition. That is useful for comparing how light a trailer starts, but it is not the same as the trailer’s maximum permitted loaded mass.
Always compare at least four numbers:
- Tare: the trailer’s published empty mass under the manufacturer’s stated specification.
- ATM: the maximum permitted total mass of the loaded trailer.
- Payload: the difference between tare and ATM, subject to what is included in the tare figure.
- Tow-ball load: the downward load applied to the tow vehicle through the coupling.
Why buyers look for lightweight campers under 1000kg
For couples, solo travellers and weekend campers, keeping tare below 1,000kg can make a compact trailer more practical to live with.
- Potentially broader tow-vehicle choice, subject to every vehicle limit.
- Easier reversing and campsite manoeuvring than many larger caravans.
- More realistic driveway or garage storage.
- Less overall bulk for short trips.
- A permanent sleeping cabin without tent setup.
Lower weight does not automatically mean better. Stability, braking, suspension, tyre specification, loading and vehicle matching still matter.
IWANA campers under 1000kg tare
| Model | Format | Published tare | ATM | Overall height | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Teardrop | 650kg base tare | 1,000kg | 1.97m | From $28,200 AUD |
| Outback 2.0 | Squaredrop | 850kg tare | 1,300kg | 2.10m | From $25,200 AUD |
| Drift | Compact camper | 700kg dry reference | 1,500kg | 2.025m with rack | From $34,700 AUD |
Options and individual builds affect final weight. The compliance plate and final written specification for the individual trailer are the figures that matter when loading and towing.
Why ATM matters as much as tare
A trailer can have a low empty weight but a much higher ATM. That is not necessarily a problem—it can provide useful payload—but it changes the tow-vehicle calculation.
The Landscape has up to 350kg between its approximately 650kg tare reference and 1,000kg ATM using the published figures. The Outback 2.0 has 450kg between its 850kg tare and 1,300kg ATM. Drift currently uses a 700kg dry reference weight with a 1,500kg ATM; its final plated tare depends on the finished build. Batteries, water, gas, awnings, fridges, food and personal gear all use the available payload.
Can a small SUV tow a camper under 1000kg?
Possibly, but tare alone cannot answer that question. Check the exact vehicle’s braked towing capacity, maximum tow-ball load, payload, GVM, GCM where applicable, and the rating of the fitted towbar.
A trailer that starts below 1,000kg can still exceed a vehicle’s useful limits once loaded. The safest approach is to compare the trailer’s realistic touring mass with the exact vehicle variant.

Does under 1000kg mean easy to tow?
Lower mass can help, but towing feel depends on more than kilograms. Aerodynamics, tyre pressures, suspension, speed, crosswinds, road surface, loading and tow-ball balance all affect the combination.
Think of “under 1,000kg” as a useful filtering point, not a guarantee that every vehicle will be suitable or every trailer will tow the same way.
Teardrop or squaredrop under 1000kg?
Both formats can sit below 1,000kg tare. A teardrop typically uses a curved profile and often appeals to buyers prioritising compact touring and a softer aerodynamic shape. A squaredrop uses straighter walls and roof lines, which can create more vertical storage surfaces and a more utility-focused cabin.
Within the IWANA range, Landscape is the lighter teardrop option, while Outback 2.0 uses the squaredrop format with higher ground clearance and more ATM.

What should couples prioritise?
For two-person travel, a low tare is valuable only if the cabin still works well. Check sleeping dimensions, access from both sides, ventilation, storage, kitchen setup and whether the space is comfortable during bad weather.
Our 2 Person Camper Trailer Australia guide covers those practical details.

Frequently asked questions
Is a camper under 1000kg considered lightweight?
There is no single legal or industry-wide marketing definition of “lightweight”. A tare below 1,000kg is relatively light compared with many full-size caravans, but buyers should still compare ATM, payload and actual loaded weight.
What is the lightest IWANA camper?
The Landscape is currently the lightest IWANA model, with a published base tare of 650kg.
Is the Outback 2.0 under 1000kg?
The Outback 2.0 has a published tare of 850kg. Its ATM is 1,300kg, so its maximum permitted loaded mass is above 1,000kg.
